Artistes from all over India have come together to save the tiger.

Imagine this – you go to one of Delhi’s swanky malls and there’s a tiger there. Well, that’s going to happen. In fact, there are going to be tigers everywhere – in schools, malls, hospitals, movie halls, hotels and even at the CM’s residence!

Relax – these tigers are going to be works of art, 58 fibreglass sculptures painted by various artistes and put up at different venues across the city.

Tigers may get right of passage in Vidarbha habitat corridors

PUNE: The Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) and Maharashtra government will draw up a feasibility plan to secure a tiger habitat corridor between Nagzira wildlife sanctuary and Navegaon national park which is 50 km away in Vidarbha.

“National highway 6 passes through this corridor and the plan will look at how to protect it,” said Sandeep Kumar Tiwari, head of WTI’s Wildlands division. WTI is a non-profit conservation organisation.

Stolen tiger, camels make first public appearance after being found safe

BOWMANVILLE, Ont. – Jonas the tiger is ready to greet his public.
The 150-kilogram Bengal tiger made international headlines last week, after a truck carrying him was stolen from a motel parking lot in Quebec.
The Bowmanville, Ont., zoo that owns Jonas is holding a news conference later today, announcing that the tiger is safely home.

Monitoring system for Project Tiger Reserve areas launched

Union Minister for Environment & Forests Jairam Ramesh today launched a new monitoring system that is expected to improve the effectiveness of all surveillance and anti-poaching interventions in Project Tiger Reserve areas.

According to an official press release, the tool has been developed to strengthen the interventions by field directors in order control poaching and prevent further intrusions into the forests. It will also ensure that patrolling is done by the forest guards.

“There are 39 Tiger Reserves in the country today. This system will ensure that the surveillance activities that are done by field director and his colleagues are based on ground level information,” Mr Ramesh said.

He said the system has been developed by the Wildlife Institute of India in collaboration with the Zoological Society of London and the National Tiger Conservation Authority.

The releae said about 3.5 lakh sq km of forest area of tiger reserves and non-tiger reserves as well as general forest areas is being covered at the beat level. The expertise of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) is also being involved in the process and, in many states, they have associated in Phase I data collection.

Rare Amur tigers born in Sioux Falls

The Great Plains Zoo in Sioux Falls has a new litter of Amur tiger cubs.
Zoo President and CEO Elizabeth Whealy says the three cubs born March 8 are important to the survival of the Amur tiger population.
There are fewer than 400 of the tigers in the wild. The Great Plains Zoo has nine of 130 Amur tigers in zoos accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

Bengal tigers in India conserved by Bournemouth family

The Whittle family from Bournemouth emigrated from Dorset to India in 1997, to set up a tiger sanctuary.
Geoff Whittle, his wife Cherrie, and sons, Olly and Jamie, had fallen on hard times.
During the recession, their business was experiencing a “trough”, and their property was in negative equity.
They decided to reassess their lives and opted for an adventure that suited their “love of the outdoors”, and enabled them to “give something back”.
Geoff said: “Jamie was nine and Olly was 11 at the time.
“Jamie was quite happy to stay with me and Cherrie and do what we thought was best – not that we really knew what that was – but, Olly was miffed by whole idea.
“He had just got a paper round and was thinking about girlfriends. His initial reaction was ‘what have I done wrong?’

NEW DELHI: India’s newfound partnership with China on environment issues has yielded results in the area of tiger protection as well. In what could be seen as a new year’s gift for the Indian tiger, China’s State Forestry Administration has issued a directive calling for the protection of tigers, especially the need to step up action against illegal trade in tiger parts and products.
