It is like that famous a scene from Walt Disney’s The Jungle Book as they troop contentedly along the red dusty trail in ones and twos, ears flapping in the midday heat.

I can almost hear that song as they pass: “Hup two three four, keep it up two three four.”

OK, it is not quite in a military style, as befitting Colonel Hathi’s soldierly patrol from the film. But there is a definite semblance of order as these sublime creatures process purposefully through the town.

These dramatic pictures show a clash of the titans as a protective elephant mum and a ferocious crocodile get in an epic tug of war in Zambia.

The female elephant and her baby were drinking from the Luangwa River in the South Luangwa National Park when they were attacked.

Leaping out of the murky waters a vicious crocodile bit down on the female’s trunk.

Elephant ‘Ongard’ is brave and bold

He’s not even a month old but Melbourne’s newest baby elephant has big shoes to fill if he’s to live up to his name.

The calf was named Ongard last week – a Thai moniker meaning brave, bold, audacious and powerful.

The name was chosen through a public vote of 8000 people from five options. Each was Thai, reflecting Ongard’s parentage.

Ongard is the first ever male elephant calf born at the Melbourne Zoo and follows his half sister Mali, born in January, as only the second baby elephant born at the zoo.Environment Minister Gavin Jennings announced the winning name at Melbourne Zoo’s Trail of the Elephants exhibit.

When you see the beautiful baby elephants on this Sunday’s Dateline, you’ll no doubt find it hard to believe that anyone would want to threaten their very existence.

But more and more of Kenya’s baby elephants are being left orphaned and starving by poaching and drought, and that’s where a special orphanage steps in.

Daphne Sheldrick and her team of keepers at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust have been acting as an adoptive elephant family for over 30 years, building a special bond with the surprisingly tame animals.

The first baby elephant born at the Melbourne Zoo is named ‘Mali’, after more than 30,000 suggestions were submitted in a naming contest. Mali is the Thai word for jasmineZoo keepers say Mali is the first baby elephant to be born in the zoo’s 148-year history,Zoo officials say thousands have been by to visit Mali since she was born six weeks ago.

Motola limbers up with her new leg

A 48-year-old Thai elephant has been fitted with an permanent artificial leg, 10 years after losing a limb from treading on a land mine.
Motola was measured up at an elephant hospital on Saturday before experts made the leg and fitted it on Sunday.
The elephant had been walking with the help of a temporary artificial leg made of canvas, the Associated Press news agency reports.
A much younger elephant at the same hospital already has a false leg.

Golden Globe-winner Kyra Sedgwick has sent a letter to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg on behalf of PETA.

Hot on the heels of a PETA undercover investigation that exposed how Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circuses beat their elephants, Kyra has urged Bloomberg to make this summer the last time that Ringling Bros. is invited to perform in Coney Island.

I am not an easy person to convince…

… when so called miracle instruments/objects/products as-seen-on-tv are presented to me.
I am the sort of person, like many of you I am sure, who thinks right away: “yeah, right, like this is *the* miraculous next thing that will work”.
I’ve been looking online at a lot of advertisements and pub and even read through and through at the site where they sell THE FURminator.
Since I was skeptic, there was just one thing to do: order one and see if the thing really does the good deshedding it was supposed to do.
I was extremely and happily surprised that this brush/deshedding tool (whatever you want to call it) is really really doing the job!
Not only did it took massive amounts of shedding hair out of my pet’s fur but it also did it in less time than when I used another type of comb.
I posted here on the blog a video showing how it worked on our Siberian Husky, Amarok. You will see that I am just a regular person, very happy with the tool she got and the result she obtained while using The FURminator.
I was so happy I also used it on my long haired cat, Mimi. And it worked as well! I know the FURminator comes in different sizes as well. Maybe a medium one would have been more appropriate to get the job done on this cat here. I’ll let you be the judge of that.

p.s.: there is going to be a few places where I talk French: what can I say, the Quebecer in me resurface naturally:)
