Renovations at the Nanaimo SPCA that wrapped up last week brought the end of a leaky roof and dark, cold rooms.

Communal cat rooms at the shelter got a much-needed facelift with the donation of labour and materials by several city companies. Weeks of work wrapped up Thursday.

Thirty-three cats call the communal rooms home but recently there were 70. The Nanaimo SPCA was overflowing with cats and feared it may be forced to turn some away. Part of the problem stemmed from the branch becoming responsible for a large number of animals seized from a compulsive cat hoarder.
