Happy news about animals
Another report of a mysterious black panther, roaming a densely wooded area in western Upshur County. The latest sighting of a reported black panther is in an area off of Highway 154 near Rhonesboro, in an area called Raintree Lake.In a remote wooded area called Raintree lakes, residents are unnerved by the night time yowls of a big cat they believe is in their community.
“It’s a big black panther that’s what it looks like a big black cat” said area resident Mitchell Bransford.
For weeks many have heard it, and some have come face to face with it. Residents say they’ve not only heard the sound like a woman screaming, but they’ve seen it.
“I’ve seen him on two or three occasions and I’m not talking about a glance I’m talking just straight at him and him just looking at me, kind of gave me chills” said Bransford.
But wildlife experts say a black panther in east Texas is near impossible.
“It’s just not likely, there’s no such thing as a black panther, there are black jaguars, but it’s more likely that they’re seeing a black hog or a black otter” said Texas Parks And Wildlife biologist Charlie Muller.
But now pets are missing in the area, and some livestock has been killed, leading many to think a big cat is responsible.
“A lot of dogs have come up missing” said one neighbor.
“One of my calves was torn up torn a part stomach was ripped open throat ripped open” said area rancher Wayne Ballard.
Mountain lions do reside in East Texas and experts think, in low light, they are being mistaken for black panthers, which are actually South American Jaguars.
“It could and most likely is a cougar or mountain lion” said Muller.
If they’re out there Muller says someone will have to prove it.
“You’d have a better chance of finding bigfoot” said Muller.
Jaguars have been seen in Texas in the past, but Muller says the odds of a black one, which are very rare in the wild, residing in East Texas are extremely remote.

Traveling north on hwy 271, just past the church at Midway, Don r. and I saw a large black cat cross the hwy, going right to left. This was in 1973 at about 7 A.M. I have been in East Texas all of my life, and do alot of hunting, exploring, ect. This was not a big house cat, bever, dog, deer, or any other animal other than a black cat, with a long, full tail, small head, small ears, and a slick coat. I’m not sure if Midway is in Upshur county or Camp county. It was a bright morning and came from a well started pine tree farm and entered the woods just north of the church grounds. This is the only big cat I’ve seen, other than the bobcat, which is considerably smaller.
A friend and myself saw a black cat in Marion county ( 2004 hunting season) at our deer lease. We were driving into the lease and when we rounded the corner we saw the cat in the headlights ,stopped backed up and put the lights on it. It appeared to be around 8 or 9 foot from it’s nose to the tip of it’s tail, jet black, and was a beautiful animal. Once the truck stopped and the lights were on it the cat left in quiet a hurry. I am 56 yr’s old and Bruce is 63 so we saw what we saw and there was no mistaking that it was a huge black cat. We have never seen it again and we have been looking pretty hard every time we come around the curve.. We have been hunting together for a long time and neither one of us had ever seen a cat like that before. We have seen plenty of Bob cats . My daughter in law shot a Bob cat this year (2008 hunting season) and said that it had a big cat with it,She thought a cougar. My grandson was with her and he saw them too.
To Bobby Bess. Midway is in northern Upshur County. We have land in that area. I neighbor saw a black panther earlier this year during in daylight.
Also, in 1980, a friend of mine saw a Black Panther and two kittens about 6 miles south of Raintree Lake in the pasture late in the day. He was positive it was not a cat, hog or calf. He was very familiar with the pasture and scale as it backed up to his home.
March 3rd, 2011.
We live in the Fruitvale, Texas area.
We saw a Black Panther come into our yard, and walk around.
We are sure it was a Black Panther, it was pretty big, and it had a different walk about it, also its tail curled up.
I tried to take pictures but it was too far away by the time I got the camera, and the pictures turned out blurry.
This was at 6:00pm, still daylight.
It crossed the street, and chased some horses then 15 minutes later came back into our yard again, then went back across the street again.
All I can say is my Grandson will not be playing outside for awhile.
