There is little doubt the Black Stallion Literacy Project is successful at inspiring young readers. What may be surprising is that it’s becoming increasingly clear that it also does wonderful things for the horses.

“It’s great for the kids,” said Karry Bass, owner of Stone Creek Ranch with her husband, Arvell, “but it’s great for the horses, too.”

Monday and Tuesday, 833 children from Baxter and Marion counties visited Stone Creek Ranch to read Walter Farley books to the horses. They were helped by 28 volunteers from Mountain Home, all experienced horse handlers.
