A dog airlifted to safety Friday in a dramatic rescue from the storm-swelled Los Angeles River was reported doing well hours later at an animal shelter.

The male German Shepherd mix was rushed to the shelter freezing and shivering after a firefighter was lowered from a helicopter to pluck him from the swirling waters.

It was not immediately clear how he became stranded there but a spokesperson at the SEAACA animal shelter said he may have been in the water for more than three hours.
