A dog is being credited with saving a family after a small fire broke out in a home early Monday, firefighters said.

Battalion Chief Bruce Griswald said the dog woke up a child after fire broke out in the kitchen of a home on the 600 block of Northwest Fourth Avenue around 5 a.m.

The child woke up the rest of the family and they safely evacuated the home. Five or six people lived in the home.

Griswald said the cause of the fire was under investigation. Damage was described as light.
